Description abhimj 2013-05-15 14:10:35 UTC
File is a XLS file with UTF 8 encoding. Has Devanagari characters.

Till 4.0.2, the file was opening correctly, with no unwanted spaces in between the words.

Installed and opened the same file in 4.0.3.3 today, and found that it showed unwanted spaces between the words that were not there. Also, in the input line, it shows the words with the spaces removed.

Reverted back to 3.6.6. Its working as expected.

4.0.3.3 opened and showed the English words correctly, though.

The file is shared on Google drive. The link to the file is mentioned in the URL field.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Hi abhimj..

To check & analyze that, I think we need:
- your XLS file attached here (in this bug page), because from google drive I only can save as XLSX
- screenshot of what is expected & unexpected (if possible)
- your windows version

Hi ign_christian,

Attached zips of XLS file and the screenshots.

The behavior is also reproduced with XLSX and ODS.

Explanation of the screenshots-
I have marked the individual words of one cell for example in blue boxes so it will be easier to understand word boundaries.
Note the difference in the spacing shown between two words in selected cell and input line field in the screenshots 3.6.6_Correct and 4.0.3.3_Incorrect.

In contrast the Speeling dialog shows the correct spacing even in 4.0.3.3

As mentioned earlier, i have been using the same file in 4.0.2 as well and it showed correct spacing as required.

- your windows version
Windows 7 Home Basic Service Pack 1 64 bit.
Processor - Intel Core i3 dual core
RAM 3 GB
Model Dell Inspiron N5110

One more observation, when i open the file in 4.0.3.3, it shows the correct spacing for some time, then it looks like it does some processing and starts showing extra spaces. Slow enough to notice that, but too fast to capture that in screen shot.

Hope this helps.

Screenshot from Win7 32bit (spellcheck disabled)

Seems that nothing wrong if I disable spellcheck (see attachment -> same cell highlighted)
Tested on LO 4.0.3.3 (Win7 Home Premium 32bit)

set status to UNCONFIRMED
- I can't perform spell check because I don't have Hindi languange installed
- I think there is a bug in formatting with spellchecking -> see also Bug 56571

Hi ign_christian,

I checked by turning off spell check, and it does appear that doing so resolves the problem, but still not completely.

Even with spell check disabled, the display of spacing is not consistent
e.g. from the screenshot that you have attached, the single space is still not shown in the text in the input field,
incorrect spacing still being shown in the cells B5, B6, H12 are a few.
Also, when i try to edit text, the editable text again starts showing incorrect spacing.

This never happened till 4.0.2, even with spell check on.

This seems to have been fixed.
I checked on Version 4.0.4.2 (Build ID: 9e9821abd0ffdbc09cd8c52eaa574fa09eb08f2)

Its working as expected now.

Ok to close this as resolved.
