Description monster.frankenstein 2011-09-27 21:34:28 UTC
Problem description:
A text box is selected, copied, pasted. and then the pasted copy is moved around. The pasted copy of the box initially overlaps the original box, so it's not always apparent that anything was pasted (this by itself is not the bug of concern; it is more or less cosmetic). Pressing the arrow keys will then move the new text box away from the original spot, revealing that there are now two identical text boxes. In normal operation, the user would repeatedly press the arrow keys until the box arrives at its new location on the slide. Instead, either immediately after pasting, or while moving the new box around with the arrow keys, the system suddenly locks up.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a text box or multiple text boxes
2. Ctrl-C to copy
3. Ctrl-V to paste
4. Repeatedly press the down arrow to move the newly pasted text to a different location on the slide. (or hold the down arrow key momentarily)

Current behavior:
Following the steps will (at random) result in a complete system hang. Mouse pointer can move around, but the system is otherwise unresponsive, and the processor heats up.

Expected behavior:
This sequence of operations should work without risk of a crash.

Upgraded all Synaptic "Upgradeable" packages including a new kernel:
2.6.38-11-generic(i686) #50-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 12 21:18:14 UTC 2011
Bug still remains.

Bug 40141 is very similar. It locks up the entire machine, only major difference is that bug is IA64 wheras this is 32-bit.

Formerly, Firefox also locked the whole machine while browsing Google maps (ref historical Bug 20682), The Firefox problems went away after upgrading everything in synaptic, including Firefox 7.0.1.

[This is an automated message.]
This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:
