Description Stan 2011-08-16 07:06:41 UTC
When I work with a presentation in Impress, it happens quite frequently that while moving or resizing an object the desktop stops responding to input, neither mouse clicks nor keyboard input. I can move around the mouse pointer (usually in the shape of a hand or double-arrow) but I cannot do anything else. All that I am left with is a hard reboot. I have a dual-boot system and tried the same presentation in Windows 7, only to experience the same behaviour after a few minutes, so I assume that it is a problem with LO or the hardware, not the OS.

I posted this at http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/LO-Impress-3-3-3-crashes-Windows-and-Ubuntu-tt3258408.html#none and was asked to file a bug report here.

I am currently trying to produce a strace log, but ironically, I cannot get it to crash now. I will keep trying and post the results here.

Here some more details:

System: Dell Latitude E6320
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz, 8GB RAM
uname -a: Linux sppc26 2.6.38-11-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 29 19:02:55 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

By the way, I am having a couple of problems with Ubuntu on my machine, such as freezes during shut-down, but this is a known issue. I have not experienced a behaviour like that caused by LO Impress with other applications.

Please let me know if I can do anything to shed more light onto this problem. Thanks!
Comment 1 Tom 2011-08-18 05:30:22 UTC
Hi :)
Since the problem seems to have magically disappeared i have reset the importance drop-downs to a much lower priority. I'm not really a triager so i shouldn't be messing around with those things without asking or reading-up on what it means.

I have a feeling the problem was the choice of format or a hardware issue such as wobbly ram or graphics card or something that has been fixed now.
Regards and apols from
Tom :)
Comment 2 Stan 2011-08-25 08:47:01 UTC
Unfortunately, the problem reoccurred, now not only in impress but also in writer running in Ubuntu. I'm surprised that I am the only one with this problem. I still have not had anything like with with other applications. It seems to work without problems when I call libreoffice using the strace command, so I cannot generate any additional information so far.
Comment 3 Stan 2011-08-26 05:35:44 UTC
As recommended on the web site, I started Libreoffice with the following command to create a log file: strace -o /tmp/strace.log -f -tt -s 512 libreoffice

It worked with it for two days (with a hibernation in between) and today - boom! writer crashed on me exactly in the same way as impress did before (see above). However, upon hard reboot, I was unable to find the file strace.log in my /tmp directory or anywhere else on my computer. Does anyone else have an idea what went wrong or what I can do to shed some more light onto this?

Thanks for your help already!

Hi Stan,
I'm not able to reproduce this.

You might try to rename your userprofile
 - see Tools > OPtions > LO > Path for the location
 - close LO
 - rename the user folder
 - start LO again

Thanks for the advice. I have done this three times already, as some crashes resulted in an error message on startup of LO.

Cheers

[This is an automated message.]
This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugHunting_Session_3.5.0.-1

Comment 7 ADB 2012-01-20 10:57:55 UTC
I too suffer from this effect, especially when using IMPRESS.

On creating a slide and inserting a sound effect, the insertion _seems_ to have been done but when a resize ofis attempted on the element, the PC hangs (CPU locks in infinite loop???) and the only way to recover is to do a hard reboot.

This has happened several times. The 'crash' also happens when opening a presentation that has been 'saved', containing several sound effects.

I am using UBUNTU 11.10 and LibreOffice 3.3.4
Comment 8 starmatz71 2012-01-22 11:58:58 UTC
Have you tried to disable antialiasing in options?
Have you tried newer releases? LibO3.4.4 or LibO3.5.0rc1?
Can you test it please?
Comment 9 Stan 2012-01-27 02:04:50 UTC
I just found a possible explanation for the loss of control. While using Gnumeric, I experienced the following: If you add a data filter to a column (Data -> Filter), and then click on the little arrow in the top cell to display all the values you can filter for, all other areas of the screen become unresponsive to any mouse clicks, the computer becomes unresponsive to keyboard shortcuts and even the On/Off button causes no response! All you can do is to click somewhere in the list to apply the filter or press Esc on the keyboard to leave the mask. I believe that this is a major flaw in the operating system, as any program causing such a state and then crashing can cause the behaviour described in this bug report. This does not explain why LO crashes, but it does explain how a crash of LO could freeze the whole OS.

Cheers
Stan

Sorry to be the bearer of some unhappy tidings but I also managed to get this problem to appear in OpenOffice on Windows Vista! Admittedly it was on a file that I had ported across from Ubuntu so there may be some crossover problem there.

However - your logic is sound to me - also something rings a small bell in my mind about my Linux system locking up when I was doing some research via Google and my browser - I do alternate between Chrome and Firefox so cannot remember exactly what went on but I shall keep looking for situations that are not 'correct'.

I mus admit that I know save everything far more often than I used to - paranoia creeping in about losing work yet again and my dogs have told me that I swear too much when things go wrong!

Comment 12 ADB 2012-01-27 14:16:17 UTC
Try this.

I was working quite merrily on this file when it did the 'hang up' scenario.

I have tried it twicein the past few minutes and it has hung up.

What I was doing - try the following sequence and see if it 'crashes' for you:

1. Open the file
2. Scroll down to about slide 5/6 or thereabouts.
3. Insert a new blank slide
4. In this new slide, insert a "movie or sound" option (mine were sounds - MP3 files)
5. Re-size the new sound icon to small-ish.
6. Cut this icon
7. Paste this icon into the slide above it

I have had it 'crash' at steps 5 and 7

try this sound file to be inserted after slide 8, as per instructions

Try especially to add the enclosed sound file to after slide 8 (using the method described immediately above - it has just crashed again on me. Dogs are covering their ears in shame at the naughty words)
Comment 14 starmatz71 2012-01-28 11:48:58 UTC
Impress freezes after resizing the icon on page 8 and the complete unity-interface!
I had to killall soffice.bin from a terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1), after this all works fine again.

Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit and LibO 3.4.4.

IMPRESS presentation - also fails

Try this version of the file as well

In the past 10 minutes or so I have opened this file on three occasions, and it has 'crashed' on me each time.

This is different from my previous example upload of the file as I have done no actions on the file - all I wanted to do was continue editing it but when I scroll down using the mouse or page down using the page keys, it gets to about slide 10 and then hangs up.
To recover I then have to do a FORCE QUIT, so the top left options are still 'live' (the X, _ and [square] at the top left of the screen for Ubuntu).

Thanks! Problem is in videocard. On my computer with Intel video I can reproduce this behaviour by pressing print button or by exporting something to PDF.
My be somebody know how solve this problem?
Comment 19 starmatz71 2012-02-01 09:25:38 UTC
I think there is definitly a bug in LibO, I have a nVidia gforce GTX260 from MSI and LibO freezes and the complete desktop does not react anymore, mouse movement is ok but the mousecursor does not change!

After killing the prozess from a terminal the system works normally, no need to restart the desktop.

How can i help to solve this problem?

@ starmatz71: Could you let me know how you get access to the terminal to kill the process?

Is anyone working on this - I still regularly get IMPRESS to crash
Comment 23 sasha.libreoffice 2012-02-15 21:46:30 UTC
@ ADB
Please, tell: You have one monitor attached to computer or 2 when crash happens. It is important. And if 2 monitors, try experiment with Slide show->Slide show, field on bottom "Multiple displays". My be it will help.

And attach backtrace of crash, explanations is here:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
Without backtrace impossible to solve this problem.
Comment 24 ADB 2012-02-16 10:43:34 UTC
I am using a laptop computer so display is integral to the machine.

Will do a backtrace when it happens again - may be a couple of days or so

debug log from session freeze

Managed to capture a 'session freeze'.
Ran the debug software, opened up he IMPRESS presentation and then simply paged down three or four slides, doing nothing else.
IMPRESS froze - see attached log for the debug output

Hope you can do something with this!

Thanks for backtrace. I hope, it will help.
Please, try uninstall gstreamer, if possible. And see if Impress continues to crash

@ experts
Please, take look at this bug. Impress crashes, backtrace exist.
Comment 27 Thorsten Behrens (allotropia) 2012-02-20 08:53:03 UTC
So, played with the radioAndTVThemes document a lot, libreoffice 3.5.0 under opensuse 12.1 x86_64 - no signs of crashes.

Beyond that, this bug report appears to mix several, possibly unrelated problems. At any rate, please re-test with 3.5.0.

If the crasher in gstreamer persist, please install gstreamer debug packages (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash looks helpful)
Comment 28 ADB 2012-02-20 13:32:06 UTC
What are the consequences on my system as a whole if I uninstall gstreamer? Will it affect anything else?

Will upgrade to LO 3.5 in the very near future and report back.

The fault is still happening with various files that I have (managed to repeat it several times last night much to my annoyance) but it seems to be unpredictable when it starts, but when it *does* start, it affects the file almost every time and the only way to get any work done is to carry out one action, then exit IMPRESS. Go back in, do the next action, etc. Very time consuming and frustrating!

Without either a way for me to reproduce it, or a debugger backtrace with symbols (c.f. my earlier comment), I can't do anything for the while.
Comment 30 sasha.libreoffice 2012-02-29 01:15:32 UTC
And from where download LibreOffice with symbols?
Comment 31 ADB 2012-02-29 11:03:22 UTC
@sasha
I have run and attached a debug session log - please see 17/Feb attachment

May be a while before I can try LO 3.5 as the PPA for Ubuntu 11.10 still shows LO 3.4 as the latest and the chat forums say that LO 3.5 is not fully compatible with 11.10 so I may wait until Ubuntu 12 is released - due April.

However, the symptoms still persist now and again causing a lot of swearing!

And sorry for misunderstanding. I thought that LibreOffice with symbols can be downloaded from libreoffice.org. And now understand that it can be installed from Ubuntu repo.

IMHO it is Russian roulette. But without this experiment it is hard to somehow help.

To reiterate, w/o someone attaching a backtrace (see here: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport#How_to_get_backtrace_.28on_Linux.29), or one of the developers actually being able to reproduce the crash, there's very little we can do.
Comment 35 Julien Nabet 2013-01-12 07:22:19 UTC
No feedback since months. We need more recent info here. 3.3, 3.4 even 3.5 versions is quite old.
Last one is 3.6.4. At least, test a 3.6 version available on LibreOffice ppa with a brand new LO profile (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile).
Moreover, if Ubuntu has already freeze problems with your hardware which don't concern LO, either update the Ubuntu version or at least test LO on a machine without these.
For example, hibernate mode is known to not work on every machine. Indeed, one of the causes of this is a badly implemented ACPI standard part (had read once it was because MS compiler was used instead of Intel's one, first one is far less strict or something).
So at least, test hibernate function without application, if it doesn't crash at hibernate wake-up, test it with a application (other than LO). If it's still ok, now you can try with LO.
Some bugs are already very difficult to track down, it will help a lot to report LO bugs from a stable env.

Put it as WFM for the moment. Of course, if someone reproduces this, don't hesitate to reopen this case.
