This small file makes writer hang every time when copied completely

Short description:

1) Open attached file
2) Copy complete file with ^A ^C
(or: select all by dragging, followed by ^C, makes no difference)
3) writer stops responding.
4) After a few seconds the OS suggests to kill writer, because it doesn't respond.
5) kill writer
6) Sometimes I can restart writer, but sometimes I have to restart the system.

Additional info:

This started happening after last update of LibreOffice.

System:
   KDE neon 6.0
   KDE Plasma 6.0.3
   KDE Frameworks 6.0.0
   Qt version 6.6.3
   Kernel 6.5.0-26-generic (64-bits)
   Graphic platform X11

It only happens in writer, so I guess it's not something with memory or Xpad (the memory app I use).

If I start writer in safe-mode it happens too.

If I start writer in the konsole, there's no error message at all. The starting command 'libreoffice --writer' just stays on the screen. (Normally you get some error message in the konsole, when something goes wrong.)

In the attached file it happens always. If I only copy part of that file, it happens sometimes. Couldn't find any pattern in it.

No matter, with 24.8 if Skia is enabled or not.
Comment 4 Peter Zwitser 2024-04-04 08:34:30 UTC
I'm not an experienced bug hunter, but maybe this helps.

I removed the empty paragraph at the end like like m. a. riosy did. That solved the problem. But in another (large) file without empty paragraph at the end the problem still exists.

I have no idea what the error the validator gives mean. I only edit this file in LibreOffice. But I thought: maybe if I just make a new file and type the old file by hand over (it's a very small file). Maybe the errors the validator gives are then gone and maybe that makes a difference in other files too.

Well, I typed the first part of the file until the bold 'CSS'. Including font styles, borders, etc. Copied that part with ^A ^C: writer hangs.

So even if I make a new (partial) copy by hand, writer hangs.

file with the word 'huis' copied five times

Since this bug seems hard to reproduce, I tried some other things and finally found one thing that happens every time if I copy. (If I press ^C)

I made a file with only the word 'huis'. No color, border, or any other lay-out, just one simple word.

If I copy this one simple word for the first time, nothing happens. The word is simply copied.

If I copy the word for the second time (without closing the file) there's a bookmark added with the name:
'_DdeLink__24_3300722863'
If I copy the word for the third time, there's a bookmark added with the name: '_DdeLink__27_3300722863'
If I copy the word for the fourth time, there's a bookmark added with the name: '_DdeLink__31_3300722863'
If I copy the word for the fifth time, there's a bookmark added with the name: '_DdeLink__36_3300722863'

Etc. Every time I copy a bookmark is added. This happens in every document, no difference if I copy one word or the whole document. Only the numbers of the bookmark change.

So the first time I copy anything no bookmark is created, but second and later time copying with every copy a bookmark is created. (I stopped after about 20 bookmarks were created.)

The target of the link is the text I copied. If I copy one word and click on the bookmark, the one word is highlighted. If I copy the whole document, the whole document is highlighted when clicking on the bookmark.

I'm absolutely sure this started happening with the last uupdate, because I use bookmarks all the time.

Since this happens when copying, I thought maybe this has something to do with the problem.

I've added a file 'test2.odt' with only the word 'huis'. This word is copied five times, so there are four mysterious bookmarks.
Comment 6 m_a_riosv 2024-04-05 00:05:05 UTC
I can see the bookmarks in your file, but I'm not able to reproduce it from scratch.

Have you tested in Safe mode?
Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode.
Comment 7 Peter Zwitser 2024-04-05 09:08:06 UTC
It happens in safe-mode too.

What I forgot: even if I only copy (without pasting or anything) the file changes to 'edited'. That's new too. This happens even if I copy only one time. (The adding of the strange bookmarks only starts after the second time copying.)
Comment 8 Peter Zwitser 2024-04-05 10:08:51 UTC
I did one other test, because I thought it's strange a file changes because of only pressing ^C.

I made again a file with just the word 'huis', without copying or anything, and saved it.

I reopened that file and copied the word 'huis' one time, nothing more. The file changed to edited, though I only pressed ^C. No visible bookmark added.
Saved the file under another name.

Then I unpacked both files and compared them. In 'content.xml' there is a difference at the end of the file. The end of the original (without the word 'huis' being copied):

<text:p text:style-name="P1">huis</text:p></office:text></office:body></office:document-content>

The end of the file with the word 'huis' one time copied:

<text:p text:style-name="P1"><text:bookmark-start text:name="__DdeLink__1_2584462288"/>huis<text:bookmark-end text:name="__DdeLink__1_2584462288"/></text:p></office:text></office:body></office:document-content>

The rest of content.xml is the same. This bookmark is not visible in the sidebar with bookmarks.

If I copy the word 'huis' a second time, another bookmark is added in content.xml at the end of the file. And this time the bookmark is visible in the sidebar, but only one bookmark.

I don't know if this is of any use. If I only cause confusion because reacting too much, please let me now. I'm only used to hunting bugs in html etc.

Comment 10 Peter Zwitser 2024-04-05 21:30:54 UTC
I really don't know what happened, but it looks like it is solved.
Just for information I'll tell what I did (or actually: not did...)

1) removed libreOffice completely.
2) removed the PPA with libreOffice.
3) installed the default version from Neod. That's version 7 and something.
4) The problem still existed.

So it started to look it had nothing to do with the latest update from LibreOffice. I noticed the problem the same day LibreOffice was updated, so I thought it had to do with that update.
Maybe it was something in my system that was recently changed? That would also explain why it's hard to reproduce the bug for other people.

5) Logged out and logged in again, but this time not with X11 but with Wayland.

Problem was gone. Ah, so it probably has something to do with the combination LibreOffice/X11.
But Wayland has (for the moment) a lot of other problems, so I'd really prefer for the moment X11.

6) Logged out and logged in again, but now again with X11.

I was planning to start reading about settings from X11.
But to my big surprise the problem is gone. I copied all kind of texts about a hundred times, because I couldn't believe it, but it's really gone. Even restarted the system to be sure.

I didn't change anything at all, except changing from X11 to Wayland and back.

Sorry for the time you have spent, but since this happened just after the update from LibreOffice I really thought it had something to do with that update.

Peter, could it be that in the meantime you upgraded to 24.2.3, perhaps? See bug 160751 and related: several users report 24.2.2 crashing then the issue resolved in 24.2.3.
Comment 12 Peter Zwitser 2024-05-17 10:48:06 UTC
Hello Stéphane,

No, it was the same version of LibreOffice. The only thing I changed was X11 to Wayland, and than back to X11 again. Logging in with Wayland: crash. Logging in with X11: no crash.

At the moment I'm using:

LibreOffice 24.2.3.2

System:
   KDE neon 6.0
   KDE Plasma 6.0.4
   KDE Frameworks 6.1.0
   Qt version 6.7.0
   Kernel 6.5.0-35-generic (64-bits)
   Graphic platform X11

I repeated the exact same steps to find out if the problem still exists: no, it's fixed. Even when using Wayland the problem's gone. (But since Wayland still has a lot of other problems, I keep using X11 for the moment).
I don't know if the problem disappeared because of an update from LibreOffice, KDE Plasma or some other update, because of a combination of updates.
