Description David Smith 2022-03-29 14:37:07 UTC
Description:
Background Colour Malfunction in LibreOffice Calc

MALFUNCTION
Background colours randomly disappear & reappear, in random cells

CAUSE
Loading an image to background (Menu-Format-Arrange-To background)
whilst using
Value Highlighting (Menu-View-Value Highlighting)

CONCLUSION
Value Highlighting cannot be used if an image is in background

Steps to Reproduce:
1. LibreOffice Calc-File-New
2. Select a decent block of cells
3. Click Paint icon arrow-Select a colour
4. Select a cell in the block
5. Menu-Insert-Image (locate and open an image from a directory)
6. Whilst image is selected, Menu-Format-Arrange-To background
7. Scroll to a new section of worksheet, and scroll back
The colours should be stable, as expected
8. Activate Menu-View-Value Highlighting
9. Scroll around, as before, to see colours disappearing in random cells
   (displaying erratic behaviour)

Actual Results:
Random appearance, and disappearance, of background colours

Expected Results:
The worksheet should display background colours correctly

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

COMMENT
This BUG is bad news for any developer, because:
Value Highlighting provides at a glance knowledge of the worksheet
and
Background Colours provide at a glance knowledge of the worksheet
Both would normally be used together.

Using images as background may be required, or aesthetically pleasing.
As a background, values can be written over the images (very useful).

Background images, background colours, and value highlighting should be capable of working together.

ods file: BUG- Background colour fail when graphic sent to background AND Value Highlighting switched on

This is a simple ods worksheet.
Some cells have a background colour.
Some cells have a background image.

To recreate the bug, simply scroll around with Value Highlighting ON and OFF.

The background colours become unstable with Value Highlighting ON.

Thanks m.a.riosv for taking a look at this bug.
What are your thoughts on it's priority?

I ask out of interest rather than desperation.
I can live without value highlighting, though it is obviously better to have it.
It's a useful tool :)

As a rule of thumb, prioritization is done along the following flowchart:

Dear David Smith,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat: https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa

Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!
