Description Hope C. 2013-05-23 15:13:02 UTC
Problem description:

Since this update, my libre office likes to crash suddenly without explanation at times. Typically it is doing this while actually typing in the writer, on occasions when formatting or editing a document. There is no rhyme or reason it seems. There is no warning. All it does is "vanishes" then it will automatically reopen, recover files and I can continue.

I keep a check on running my virus program regularly. There are no issues that are found.

This is not happening in other software on the laptop.

I know there is a new office update to 4.0.3 I guess it is or something. I have not installed the update yet.

Also, the automatic updater does not work. I click it says, it is "not avaiable" and I go to the website for the update / download. I know this is not supposed to work this way but since I got Libre Office, it does work this way.

I do have a question. Is there an open source software project in the Libre family that does the same thing as say Microsoft Publisher used to do for publications? If so, please provide the link so I can get it as well. I love the software.

Thank you.

Oh, I can be reached at HopeDesigns@consultant.com as I don't know if I'll remember to come back and check comments on this feed. Thank you!

Expected behavior:

Operating System: Windows (other)
Version: 4.0.2.2 release
Last worked in: 4.0.2.1 rc

I can't assure 4.0.3 will solve your problem but it may help.

Anyway, do you reproduce this after having renamed your LO directory profile (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile)?

crashes sound very annoying but this report doesn't give any hint as to why it would crash...

with the only hint being "while typing", what i can think of is:

there were some changes to AutoCorrect in version 4.0,
can you try if it helps to disable word completion
(go to Tools->AutoCorrect, WordCompletion, uncheck "Enable word completion"),
will it stop crashing then?

if it still crashes then, does it help to go to Tools->AutoCorrect,
Options, and uncheck everything?

if even that still crashes then we know it's not AutoCorrect's fault.

@Hope C.

best thing is to test a clean LibO 4.0.4 version to see if the issue is still present or has something to do with a corrupted user profile or installation.

try this portable version of LibO 4.0.4 from winPenPack and tell us what happens:

some hints have been proposed.

BTW, we're now at 4.0.4 and you can download it from http://www.libreoffice.org/download
Comment 6 Michael Stahl (allotropia) 2013-06-26 18:42:21 UTC
so the crashing AutoCorrect has been fixed meanwhile (bug 55315),
i'd suggest to install 4.0.5 when that is released (mid-August
according to https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/4.0)
or try installing a daily build (English UI only) from

http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/libreoffice-4-0/Win-x86@6/2013-06-26_02.55.02/libreoffice-4-0~2013-06-26_02.55.02_LibO-Dev_4.0.5.0_Win_x86.msi

please report if that fixes the annoying crashes you experience.

Change 'regression' -> 'PossibleRegression' until we have independent confirmation of a regression.
