Description peter josvai 2024-03-10 10:44:15 UTC
hi,

It is extremely hard to reproduce all the weird scenarios that templates can come up with :)

But I guess we all know of their existence :) And that a good enough reason to work on them, trying to make them function better.

THEY DO FUNCTION! hundreds of millions use them on a daily basis, and they work properly. Only for a minority of Writer users (writers) keep bumping into sometimes weird situations :)

- - -

One such weird situation is that I have a template, say, alamond-23...
and when I create a document of it (based on it and linked to it), in its properties this will be the template name, "alamond-23"....

At one point I'll want to create a new year's template, so I'll save
"alamond-23.ott" as "alamond-24.ott"

"SAVE AS" -- easy-peasy... a commonplace in working with PCs..

BUT at one point, later on, I'll find that when I change the template, the documents won't update... (offer the update)...

At another point, later-later on, when I open "alamond-24", it'll be "alamond-23.ott"

(Well, actually, not like that...
instead, "alamond-23" will open for editing as "alamond-24.ott"...
and "alamond-24", the template won't be found anywhere...
except in the template directory...
and when you import it..
there will be, finally, an "alamond-24"...
but as you open it for editing (File / Templates / manage templates / edit"),
it will turn out to be "alamond-24-1.ott")

THE POINT BEING:

template names and template filenames should NOT be different...

alamond-01.ott --> alamond-01

moreover...

Opening alamond-01.ott with Libreoffice should mean the same thing in any circumstances.

Opening it "via" File / templates / manage templates"..
or opening it from recent files list...
or in the file manager...

it should mean the same thing....

in the name of transparency :)

I hope this post doesn't sound stupid, ignorant, not to mention arrogant or anything :)

I respect the fact that Libreoffice WORKS! Perfectly, for hundreds of millions on a daily basis. I respect the whole of it.

- - - thank you for developing Libreoffice and Writer - - -

 to be continued...

Thanks for the suggestion, Peter.
I'm struggling to understand the issue.
Could you please provide an example OTT, and the shortest list of numbered steps to illustrate the issue? With "actual" and "expected" results to.
Thank you!
