Description bugzilla 2024-03-03 20:40:22 UTC
LibreOffice AppImages obtained via Menu > Download > 'LibreOffice as AppImage' [https://www.libreoffice.org/download/appimage/] place the user profile in the default location ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/

This is contrary to the Note at page bottom which says "LibreOffice AppImages uses their own user profile folder, so they won’t conflict with the user profile of an installed version of LibreOffice on your system."

I've found that only the portable versions [https://appimages.libreitalia.org/portable/] create their own user profile folder e.g. ~/.config/libreoffice/24.2/user/

Could the Note should be updated/corrected to reflect this?

I believe Bug 133287 and subsequent changes by https://github.com/antoniofaccioli/libreoffice-appimage/issues/18 (now closed) may have introduced this discrepancy.

As Buovjaga indicated in https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=133287#c1 :
Please report any appimage-related topics to https://github.com/antoniofaccioli/libreoffice-appimage/issues

Alas, I cannot report as suggested because that site is closed. It states: "This repository has been archived by the owner on Feb 2, 2024. It is now read-only."

I've therefore reverted the bug status to Unresolved and seek an alternative course of action.

It is essentially a documentation issue on the web page not a programmatic one.

I can confirm the behaviour of the two builds. The portable versions has exactly the goal of having a different profile folder than the default one.

I did not delve much into details, but it has been explained to me (by Antonio) that using the default profile folder or a specific profile folder is a matter of use case, so I cannot tell something decisive on which one is the correct approach.

For the moment, yes, I can see the discrepancy in the website and I suggest, whatever decision would be made in the future on the topic, to amend the website either:

* By removing the explanation of a different profile folder from the webpage
OR
* By changing the URL to AppImages to the ones that include the '/portable/' subfolder in their URLs.

For the latter solution, I can assure the portable versions are part of the bulk build my automation do on release, so they are not there by chance and they will stay throughout releases, as long as my automation works :)

I think Antonio inserted the 'portable' option in his script to solve this issue, and this is still maintained in the tool that is used to build the versions that are linked from the main site:
https://git.libreitalia.org/libreitalia/loaih/

Since the git repository don't allow for public comments yet (this might change in the future), I suggest to still use TDF bugzilla for public collection of issues for the time being.

Antonio decided to discontinue his involvement on building the AppImages in 2022, and while his site and work are still available, as it was pointed out, it cannot/should not receive public issues anymore.

At the same time, the repository that now hosts the script has no public issue allowance, either. For completeness, it is here:
https://git.libreitalia.org/libreitalia/loaih/

I will make myself available to analyze and transfer issues from here to there, if you tag me on the bug report as raal did (thanks, btw).

My analysis and the corrective solution my side are tracked here:

Thanks for looking into this issue.

From my perspective as an average LO user, a small modification to the 'user profile' note along the lines of the following would suffice:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The default LibreOffice AppImages utilise the existing user profile of an installed version of LibreOffice on your system or creates one if none exist.

For LibreOffice AppImages that use their own user profile folder (so they won’t conflict with the user profile of an installed version of LibreOffice on your system), go to the LibreOffice Portable AppImage repository https://appimages.libreitalia.org/portable/.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first sentence covers default use of Appimage as main 'install'.

Second sentence covers user e.g. fault-finding and wanting to try different versions of LO to pinpoint a change in behaviour, and doesn't want the installed user profile to be affected/changed.
This is how I stumbled upon the discrepancy between the current Notes and reality.
