Description ivan.planinar 2024-01-05 15:46:04 UTC
Every time I restart Libreoffice Writer or create a new document (CTRL-N), it returns all previous printer settings to its own 'default' values.

That alone wouldn't be the problem if 'grayscale' wouldn't be 'default' for Writer, for some reason.

I'm using Canon Pixma mg5450 via wifi, with CUPS and Avahi with Gutenprint drivers. In CUPS I've set the driver to use RGB color and CMYK.

Latest Libreoffice version for Arch (7.6.4).

Any workaround would be appreciated as I work with color prints a lot. Thanks.

I seriously hope someone will actually look at this bug. It's very annoying and impairs the functionality.

Luckily I've found a workaround.
Libreoffice Writer actually remembers Printer settings when you change them AND save the document. It resets the Printer settings every time you open the new document.

However, the workaround is to save a blank page with desired printer settings and always open and edit that page or that document, instead of creating a new one.

Where exactly in the dialog is that "grayscale" setting?

It's in Printer Settings -> Properties -> Device tab -> Option

Libreoffice Writer always changes color mode to "Grayscale" (the first in the list), wherever new document is created. But it remembers it when the document is saved with the changed settings.

For me, the default is "From Driver", so I can't reproduce the issue on Ubuntu. (Using an Epson WF-7720. Also checked for a few Xerox, HP and Brother printer profiles I had stored.)

Version: 7.6.4.1 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: e19e193f88cd6c0525a17fb7a176ed8e6a3e2aa1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

Buovjaga, can you please have a look on Arch?

Sorry, my printer only works on Windows these days.

Yes, for me also says "from driver" (even though KCMY and RGB values are set in the driver and NOT grayscale). I'm using Canon printer.

Now what makes me think this is the issue with Libreoffice Writer and not the driver. Three things:

1. LO Writer remembers the setting when the document is saved.

That's how I use it now - I saved a blank page with changed settings and use it every time I need something to print. That's a workaround.

2. Even when I deselect "from driver" and chose the other value, it still returns everything to default when new document is created.

3. Printing in other programs like GIMP works as should. Whatever is set in GIMP remains. Default is color, as in the driver. I chose high-res 600dpi and it's there every time I need some image to print. If the driver was the issue, GIMP would also print in grayscale by default.

It should be emphasized that LO Writer is defaulting every printer setting. It could be that "grayscale" was chosen only because it's first in the list. Maybe it would default anything that's first, so 'grayscale' is just there by a chance.

I think this could be a valuable info as the bug would be that LO Writer doesn't save anything that is in "Printer Settings -> Properties -> Device tab -> Option" list at all, regardless of the color mode.

Was it always like this or is this a new problem with the latest LibreOffice?

I can choose two flavours in Arch packages - the "fresh" one that's always using the latest version and "still" that is using 7.5.9.

I tried both and they behaved the same, so I'm on 'fresh' now.
