Description David Pickett 2023-11-17 17:42:32 UTC
Description:
1) I cannot find a way to take last year's label document and move the source to a new year's odb file. I am forced to recreate my file for the Avery 8160 every year. 2) Alas, the Avery 8160 template is a bit off, so the labels I print fall off the left side in the third column. 3) I should be able to access the template layer and adjust the positions of the columns. 4) It'd be nice to get a preview of the merged labels without printing to an additional document, so I can adjust the font and such to avoid ugly folding. 5) Who maintains the Avery 8160 template, so I can let them know they botched it? 6) Where is the template file? I cannot find it under the templates menu.

Have you tried "Edit > Exchange database"?

When creating the labels, there is a "Format" tab that allows adjusting values if needed.

You can first merge them to file to PDF, before sending them to the printer.

This would be the place to report exactly what is the issue with the measurements we currently use.
> 6) Where is the template file? I cannot find it
> under the templates menu.
Templates are not used, but measurements come from this file: https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/extras/source/labels/labels.xml
These have not been touched in a very long time, so I'm not sure the issue comes from there.
I assume you are using "J8160 Address" for the Type when creating the labels?
I that's the case, these are the default values:

<label id="L79">
         <name>J8160 Address</name>
         <measure>S;6604;3810;6350;3810;720;1515;3;7;21000;29700</measure>
</label>

The meaning of the measures is:
_[C(ontinuous)/S(ingle sheet);lHDist;lVDist;lWidth;lHeight;lLeft;lUpper;nCols;nRows;lPWidth;lPHeight]_

Can you check that you picked the right brand between "Avery A4" and "Avery Letter Size" when creating the labels? Overflowing on the left in the third column could be because of printing the A4 grid onto the wider Letter paper.

In any case, bug reports are for reporting a precise issue rather than asking questions. You might find more help on https://ask.libreoffice.org/
If there is a main issue, please let's clarify that one and focus on it.

Comment 2 David Pickett 2023-12-01 20:46:58 UTC
The bug is 1) the process is not intuitive to an generally very experienced user who is using labels once a year; 2) the 8160 template is not printing in the right positions by a tiny amount, worse each column to the right.

I seem to be able to format the common label, but not the whole page.

I do create a file before printing, and I print on plain paper to verify the approximate correctness.

The process seems excessively arduous and not intuitive. At one point I could not find the synchronize and had to start over.

The labels are off in the mail and the files seem to have evaporated, never saved. Which label field would make the text move right int the farther right columns?
