Description Paul Wright 2023-08-08 15:02:26 UTC
Description:
The documentation should explain how to deal with a formula entered as text that the user wants to display the result. There are several cases where the user might end up in this position unwittingly. Even if done deliberately, it is not obvious how to reverse it.

There are two clues in the current docs, but it is not immediately obvious how they apply to this problem and they would not come up on a search:

1. The entry for "Formatting Numbers as Text" explains that changing the formatting does not apply to numbers already entered, only when they are edited or reentered. The same applies to formulas, so changing a formula as text from text to number format will not have the immediate effect of changing the cell content to the formula result.
2. The entry for "Entering a Number with Leading Zeros" describes how to force Calc to modify all the cells and thus update the formatting. A similar approach for formulas would be to find and replace "=" with "=".

It would be useful if there was an entry on converting cells with formulas formatted as text to show the formula results. This could also cover the View->Show formula (CTRL+`) option.

Thanks for the report.
Olivier, where do you think such workarounds should live?

Can't find any section in the documentation that covers this subject.
