Description carrt7 2023-04-21 20:29:20 UTC
Description:
Working on a large text document in Writer, I can search for (say) “Bug report” and edit the section. Then I can search for (say) “Linux commands”, read some text, then use Search again to return to “Bug report” easily. All my recent search texts are available in the Find window by scrolling using the arrow keys.

When I save the document and close Writer, how can I get Writer to save those search texts with the document? When I re-open the same document tomorrow to continue editing, they have all vanished - but I will often need to re-visit the same locations in the document where I edited yesterday.

If this is currently impossible, could it be added as an option in the FileSave dialog box?

carrt7

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open a document, use Find&Replace to navigate to several locations
2. save document and exit LO.
3. reload LO and reopen same document

Actual Results:
Try Find&Replace: no items are retained from previous session.

Expected Results:
Find box should retain last location searched for in previous session, and allow scrolling up through other locations used in that session.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
I realize that the Navigator can be used to reach frequently-used locations in a document. It is true that these could be bookmarked, for use in subsequent sessions.

In actual editing of long documents this would be tedious. I will often complete edits to one portion of a document (and will not need to revisit it in the near future). But I will frequently have to end a session while still working on the LAST section. On resuming, I will need to revisit nearly all the sections which refer to the section I'm editing.

I think the tool for what you like it's the navigator.

Please take a look on it.

one suggestion to searches...

in some cases, when we copy text to clipboard and
navigate to the search -- CTRL+F -- we'll see our freshly copied text in the search bar

it could be possible perhaps to use a text editor and
copy what you're looking for... from a list...

The developers should only make sure that the freshly copied text
will appear in the search field...

just an idea..

Otherwise:
the saved searches is familiar from websites...
and there they save the searches so that the server could save WORK... (in fact a lot)...

this functionality, as far as I know, starts with the database (Mariadb / my$ql)
... they (the db servers) somehow handle cashing search results...

etc, etc...

The point being that Libreoffice doesn't need such techniques, cause it's not about searches...

AND LAST and not the least:
what about Loook?

Extensive searches might be best carried out using Loook... (3 "o"-s)

I'm no expert and I'm not speaking on anybody's behalf :)

One could also add bookmarks...
they'll be saved with the document...

Thanks for the suggestions. The need for saved searches still remains.

The arguments against are:

1:"Libreoffice doesn't need such techniques, cause it's not about searches..."

Sorry, this is not correct. LibreOffice WRITER is ALL about creating/editing/collating documents. This frequently involves skipping from one section to another of a multi-page document.

2: "the tool for what you like it's the navigator"

Navigator is ideal for repetitive editing, such as updating a large instruction manual every time a new model of the device is introduced. It is not useful for one-off document editing, because you would need to know which areas you will need to revisit in future.

Working with a large document, an Editor will think "Ah, I should move that other section where the supply fails after the first few occasions to here". The next day, suppose he encounters a third section relating to the same issue? He needs to be able to locate the original searches easily to find the location.

3: "Bookmarks"

Bookmarks will help you see what resources you used yesterday, but not where you put them in your created document. Also, unless you foresee needing the resource again, you will not bookmark it.

4: "Extensive searches might be best carried out using Loook... (3 "o"-s)"

Yes indeed. But most LO users are not familiar with Python or Loook. As you point out, "the saved searches is familiar from websites..."

Please consider adding this feature to LO Writer.
