Please try Help - Restart in Safe Mode - Reset to Factory Settings and check 2 options from there and Apply and Restart.

Please come back here and tell us if the problem is solved.
Thanks

Your suggested fix didn't work although Calc seems slightly less sluggish.

(newbie warning) I likely created this mess blindly thrashing around trying to update the 7.0 LO edition shipped with 20.04 LTS. I have basic computer skills but have always used Linux only as a user/tourist. I did the update with a SNAP package. Do you think it would helpful to try to remove everything LO and start from scratch ?

No necesary. Restart in Safe mode and Factory Settings is like you have a new LibreOffice installation. So, it's enough. I don't know why.

You could try to install LibreOffice with terminal with versions from LibreOffice official web site. Search on youtube: "how to install Libreoffice from deb packages" and try.

Thanks to all for the help. The .deb package works without problem.
