Can you tell where this can be set?

This option can be altered in the "Energy saver" window in the "System settings" program. The option will be located at the top as a checkmark. Computers without dual graphics card will not have that option. You can also use third party programs like gfxCardStatus to manually cahnge the gpu in use.

Alex, the referenced bug is supposed to be fixed in 10.12.1, but this was reported in 10.12.1, is it really a duplicate?

The workaround I suggested in comment 84 of bug 100994 seemed to work already in OSX12.0. It would seem that 100994 was really 2 separate issues, one relating to colour profile setting, and the other relating to certain Macbooks that allow the user to switch to the discrete graphics chip.

I have no particular leaning either way on this. We can unDUP this report and confirm it in light of the findings for those affected by it in bug 100994, or else leave it as DUP of that, irrespective of the alleged fix through the release of 12.1. Either way, it will be a mess.
Comment 6 Alex Thurgood 2016-11-17 12:05:46 UTC
Marking as new, as bug 100994 appears to contain reports which were in hindsight 2 separate bugs, since the discrete graphics card issue is still not fixed in macOS 10.12.1, as the current report demonstrates.

On a late 2011 MacBook Pro, which would be MacBookPro8,2, I find that option. So

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Turn on automatic grahics card switch in System Settings > Energy Savings
2. Close any programs that forces discret graphics.
3. Try to open Libreoffice.

I run into no problems using latest master or Vanilla 5.2.1.4.

So now we are looking for reliably reproducing the crash.

And we need to find a pattern of configuration that causes this crash.

So far
MacBookPro8,2 → no crash
MacBookPro6,2 → crash
