Rogers says, âI doubt Head Office will approve us taking him with
us because of the extra costs of having to employ a tutor for just
the one child. The extra housing and feeding costs due to everything
having to be shipped in.â In response to Shawn's frown she adds,
âThe base is in a remote part of northern Norway <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">and</span></font>
the nearest township is over a hundred kilometres of frozen ground
away. So living at the base will be very expensive, and Timothy needs
to start school next year. Thus he'll need a tutor, <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">which</span></font>
means more housing and food has to be shipped in to the base for the
tutor, Timothy, and Anne.â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âI'll
call my parents and see about Timothy going to live with them for the
duration of this project. We'll still have to continue employ Anne to
look after Timothy so he'll not be a problem for them.â Maria
slowly nods her head while she thinks about the situation.</p>

hour later Timothy is standing at the window looking at the sea and
beach just a walk across the street and the park while assessing the
weather. Deciding it <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">i</span></font>sn't
quite warm enough to go swimming he turns to Anne as he says, âLooks
too cold for a swim this morning.â</p>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âYes,
I think we can leave your outside exercise until it warms up a lot
more. We can work on your reading skills this morning. What do you
think about living with your grandparents all the time for a few
years?â</p>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Timothy
smiles as he says, âI like the farm and animals, but I'll miss the
beach and the sea. I'm sure we can go for a lot of walks and riding
for exercise. It'll be a bit different having you there as well.â
Since his second birthday Timothy has spent two or three week living
on the farm with his grandparents while his parents went away on a
holiday by themselves. However, this was also the time Anne was sent
on her annual holidays to spend time with her own family, so Timothy
hasn't been at the farm with Anne before. He adds, âThe farm is so
very different to here. Will you like it?â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âI
don't know. I've lived my whole life here in Sydney. I've enjoyed
living and working for your family as I love the sea, and living in
this big apartment has been heaven for me. I'll miss going for a
daily swim and the time we spend in the park and on the beach. <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">But</span></font>
I know I'll enjoy teaching you at the farm and helping you with your
school work.â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âSchool
work! Why?â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

turned five two weeks ago, so you start school next year. That's the
law. Anyway, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as you get to meet more new
kids and learn new things in a structured environment.â</p>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âI'm
glad you'll be there to help me with the learning. However, <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">we</span></font>'ll
need to come up with a new name for me to <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">call</span></font>
you as Grandmother insists I call her <i>'Nan,'</i> so I can't call
you that as well.â When Anne was hired as Timothy's nanny his
parents decreed he <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">was
to</span></font> call her '<i>Nanny Anne.'</i> However, over the
years that shrunk to just <i>'Nan'</i> because it was a lot easier
for him to say. Now it'll cause an issue with having two people
called <i>'Nan'</i> in the same household, and his grandmother has
more right to use the title.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">âWe
won't have to change anything until we're at the farm. So we've got
time to think about it.â</p>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Timothy
nods his head in agreement while he moves over to sit at the small
table they use for his lessons, it sits <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">b</span></font>eside
the window with a view of the sea and beach. Once comfortable he
pulls the larger of the two dictionaries on the table to him while he
opens it at the bookmark. After running his finger down the page he
stops at the word after the last one he studied yesterday, <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">then
he</span></font> says the word out loud and reads the definition. An
hour later they stop for milk and an Anzac biscuit each before
changing to the smaller dictionary and starting at where they left
off in the French dictionary. Timothy is to learn French at the same
time he learns English <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">because</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">
</span></font>his mother insists on it.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">The
rest of the late November Wednesday passes as most days do in this
household. Some outside exercise, some indoor exercise, some play,
and some studies. Anne goes to a lot of effort to make sure Timothy
does enjoy the exercise and studies, thus he sees a lot of them as a
form of play as well as exercise and studies.</p>

dinner that evening Timothy is informed Anne will be taking him to
live on the farm with his father's parents on a full time basis.
Timothy is to spend the next few days packing his things to travel
down next Tuesday. Shawn finishes with, âI'm providing legal
authorities for both of your grandparents, your Uncle Roy, the two
farm hands, the family solicitor, and Anne to be able to authorise
anything that needs to be done for your care. They'll all be your
guardians and you have to do as they tell you to. Your mother and I
expect you to listen to them and obey them all. Do you understand,
Timothy?â This receives a response of a simply nod from the young
boy.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Maria
says, âTimothy, your Uncle Roy is on his way back to the farm full
time as he's been medically discharged from the Army. This will give
you a good opportunity to know him better.â Timothy nods again, as
he knows there's nothing he can say in response to th<font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">e</span></font>
statement.</p>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">The
next week Anne and Timothy travel to the farm <i>'Rogers</i><i>'</i><i>
Refuge'</i> at the base of a ridge a little south-west of Rivers in
southern New South Wales. On the way down in the train Anne and
Timothy speak of how things will be different at the farm, especially
after Timothy starts going to school in the nearby township. The farm
is about ten kilometres from the town where the schools and most
daily shopping is done. <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">While</span></font>
all of the big shopping is done in the city of Rivers which is about
thirty kilometres <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">away
in the other direction. The road the farm is on runs between the town
and the highway which goes to Rivers </span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">and</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">
other places in the state.</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">
Both roads are one lane each way with the highway having the benefit
of wider lanes and surfaced breakdown lanes on each side of the road
as well as being a better quality surface to drive on.</span></font></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Timothy
and Anne are met at the Rivers Railway Station by Roy Owen Rogers,
generally known as <i>â</i><i>Cowboyâ</i> and by Timothy as Uncle
Roy. <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">After
the introductions Roy says, âGood news and bad news, Tim. I now
have a permanent limp and have been medically retired. That means you
get to spend more time with me. That's both the good news and the bad
news</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">,</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">
because it means I can spend more time teaching you things.â</span></font></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; font-weight: normal; line-height: 100%">

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">Timothy
is about to say his full name, but he decides the change in living is
so big that a name change too should make it easier for him to accept
all of the changes. Thus he simply nods his agreement with his uncle
while he helps with the hand luggage. After the</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">y're
all in the </span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">SUV</span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">
they drive around to the freight company where the bulk of their gear
has been shipped to the day before. Ten minutes later it's all tied
down </span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">in
the back of the SUV </span></font><font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">and
they're on their way to the farm.</span></font></p>

stop at a bootmaker's shop on the way out of Rivers so both Tim and
Anne can have casts made of their feet. Roy explains, âWe've a lot
of Brown Snakes on the farm, and they're deadly. So we all need to
wear good boots when out and about on the farm. I don't think the
usual farm boots are good enough for us, so I get some made to fit
from a firm that makes quality work boots. Tim, while you're growing
we'll have to get casts made on a regular basis to make sure they're
made to suit your growing feet. These are quality boots, so there's a
good market for used boots that still have reasonable wear on them,
especially the smaller size boots.â He points at a range of
footwear arranged on a wall nearby.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">The
shop owner says, âRoy calls them boots. But, as you can see, they
also have a large range of fashion and day wear styles. So pick out
the styles and colours you want to have made up.â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Roy
adds, âMake sure you only pick styles that go above the ankle. I
suspect Tim will want a few pairs that also double as running shoes
for general wear. You'll both need one pair of dress style boots. I
call them boots because I was taught shoes don't cover the ankles
while boots go to above the ankles.â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">While
looking over the range of footwear Anne asks, âHow are these
different to others?â</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">The
shop owner says, âMost safety boots have toe protection made of
steel or a stiff plastic like material with good soles for sound grip
on a concrete floor. These have a special composite and ceramic
protection <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">of
the whole of the front of the foot, the sole, heel, and sides as a
single unit with hard wearing soles suitable for farm work and hiking
as well as the general warehouse work the other companies make safety
footwear for. These cost more, but they protect against more and last
longer. Roy also buys the special range with a Kevlar layer under the
leather to protect the rest of the foot and ankle above the ceramic
cover protection. The Kevlar is to protect against snake bite, but
will also protect against a lot of other projectiles as well. There's
a cut-away boot over there.â</span></font></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%"><br/>

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 100%">Anne
and Tim go to look at the cutaway, and Roy joins them to point out
the various layers. He says, âThe main protective piece is like a
<font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">large</span></font>
clog made of a carbon fibre and composite weave set in a strong
ceramic mix which is actually tougher than most steel cap boots.
Inside that is a layer of cushioning material. The <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">lot</span></font>
is covered with Kevlar sewn to the inside of a leather outer cover
then it's all set in a rubber like compound <font color="#000000"><span style="font-weight: normal">to
provide the sole and waterproof the lower half of the foot.â</span></font></p>
