Description Gabriel Diosan 2015-06-03 15:34:35 UTC
Draw: Polygons should have a separate icon on the Drawing toolbar

Current Situation

1. Open LibreOffice Draw
2. In the Drawing toolbar you will notice that "Polygon Filled", "Polygon (45) Filled", "Polygon" and "Polygon (45)" are situated under the "Curve" icon in the toolbar.

Proposal

Move all the Polygon icons to a separate "Polygon" icon with drop down menu in the Drawing toolbar. This will leave "Curve", "Curve Filled", "Freeform Line, Filled" and "Freeform Line" under the "Curve" icon.

Justifications

1) Polygons are not generally thought of as curves but objects made up of straight edges (my personal subjective opinion).
2) By placing the polygon icons under "Curve" it makes them less likely to be discovered as a user may think that only curves or freeform lines are available in the drop down menu.
3) When thinking of polygons, I would generally think of a closed object, whereas curves or freeform lines can be open objects.

Note: This is just a suggestion based on my personal opinion, happy to consider comments or thoughts. The issue should have some input from the UX team if it is considered further.

Tested as far back as LibreOffice 3.5 and up to LibreOffice 5.1 Alpha. The UI is the same in both.

UX Team -- please take a look at this enhancement. Thanks!

Me and Cor were discussing this in bug 88287. The tooltip primary just needs to be changed to better state what is in the drop down menu, as all the items in it are related to drawing polylines. Not sure there is an advantage of separating the two into different toolbar entries.
