Every time I try to open any of my saved Writer files, I get the above message and am only given the choice to open in read-only.

Hello C A,

Thank you for reporting the bug. 
In order to have more information about the bug, could you add the version of libreOffice you are using and
 try to reproduce it with a master build from https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/ ?
You can install it alongsidethe standard version.
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the master build

You suggested that I try to reproduce the issue with a master build. I have no idea what that means. I'm sorry!

I did go to the website you gave me, (https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/ ?) but when the site opened, I couldn't make sense of what I was supposed to do.

Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
to see if the bug persist.
